A busy couple of days in the land of the Maple Leafs.

Yesterday, Bryan McCabe finally gets around to signing his ridiculous contract. 5 years at $5.75 million with a no-trade clause is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. He did get a bit better defensively as the season went on, but when a better player in Wade Redden settles for only a 2 year deal, 5 years is too much. Plus, I don't see why he deserved that much more than Kaberle who was arguably AS important, if not moreso. Guess this means they're out of the Pronger sweepstakes too.

Then today comes word that Domi is being bought out and the team isn't exercising its option on Belfour. Two good moves, even if they mean the Leafs will take a hit on the salary cap. Belfour completely blew last year and I see no reason to believe he was going to miraculously rebound this year, especially at his ridiculous salary. As for Domi, yes he was good in the community and all that, but he was taking up a roster spot that one of the promising younger guys could occupy as well if not better.

Finally, word that Gary Roberts wants the Florida Panthers to orchestrate a trade back to Toronto. I loved Gary Roberts when he was a Leaf, he epitomized heart and determination and all that. Then he goes and gets all pissy when the Leafs won't acquiesce and give his buddy Joe Nieuendyk a big deal and he fucks off to Florida. He still has one year and $2.25 million or something left on his contract, which seems kind of exhorbitant for a 41 year old guy who spent most of last year battling injuries. I don't know, I'm kind of the fence about him. At this point the Leafs should be trying to focus on speed and youth, not continuing their age-old tradition of bringing in older, fading veterans.
