Over the weekend I think I set some sort of reading speed record for myself. I started reading 'god is Not Great' by Christopher Hitchens Thursday night and finished it Sunday. Now it was a shade under 300 pages so it wasn't like reading War and Peace or anything, but still, that's pretty good for me. I found it to be quite the interesting read, though I'd imagine if you went into it with strong religous convictions you might not enjoy it as much.
It is amazing though, in the past year or so I've read more books than I have since high school ten years ago. I'm not even sure what sparked this renewed interest in reading? I guess I just got tired of watching the same old shit on TV every night. So now instead of watching an episode of Seinfeld for the 50th time, or some stupid MTV reality show I'll just lie down and read.
I tend to stick to non-fiction. So far I've read about:
- the campaign for Europe in WWII after Normandy
- Japanese treatment of POWs in WWII
- two books about the Hells Angels, one about an informant in Quebec who died mysteriously and the other about how they spread across the globe
- a Neil Young biography
- Hamas
- two books about hockey, one by Dave Bidini of the Rheostatics about trying to find hockey in unusual places and '67 by Damien Cox and Gord Stellick about the end of the Leafs dynasty
- the Mossad's killing of those responsible for the Munich Olympics killings
- the Manson family murders
- Romeo Dallaire's 'Shake Hands with the Devil' about Rwanda
Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Pretty diverse list eh? I just usally walk into Chapters and wander around until something catches my eye. I'm not sure what's next, though I am kind of interested in reading something about the Mormons.
I saw the PBS series on them and it piqued my interest. I just find their whole history, the way the book of Mormon came about, Joseph Smith, the way they baptise people even after they died, everything is fascinating (not in a I want to join way mind you). The biography of Joseph Smith, 'No Man Knows My History' is probably what I'm aiming for. I mean, a book that's controversial enough to get its author ex-communicated sounds like a winner in my books. Though I haven't found it in the two Chapters I've looked in so far.
poor pathetic me
me, blabbering on about whatever I want since there's no one to stop me
